United Martial Arts Centers are proud to announce a brand new program to help motivate children to read. The program is called the Martial Arts Reading Program (MARP). The program is designed to motivate students to read books, help them with comprehension, and reward them with a similar system that we use in Taekwondo. It will also require students to practice writing and relate what they have read to martial arts principles.
The MARP will work as follows: Each time a student reads ten books, they will write all the books that they read in a reading log. They will then have to fill out the sheet and answer the questions in the reading log using their favorite book that they have read. When these requirements are fulfilled, the students will present the reading log to an instructor. They will then be awarded a yellow belt patch that will go on the arm of their uniform. When they fulfill the requirements again, they will move up to the next rank and receive an orange belt patch. By the time a student receives a Black Belt in reading, they will have read 100 books and written ten reports on how their favorite stories related to Martial Arts Principals.
When a student receives a Black Belt in the MARP they will receive a special Black Belt Certificate presented at our Annual Banquet, along with a special uniform designed for them.
Students who are reading large books, such as Harry Potter, will count every 75 pages as one book for the reading log.
The success of this program will depend on the support of the parents and teachers. Please initial on the reading log once a student has finished with a particular book. Also, please review the report on the reading log to make sure it is done to the best of their ability.
As educators, we feel it is crucial to motivate children to develop the skills they need for their future. As Martial Arts Instructors, we feel it is crucial to motivate children to do the best they can in whatever they do. As parents, we need to figure out how to motivate our children to develop their reading skills and to motivate them to try their best.
We cannot wait until we are able to give out our first yellow belt patches to the students. Good Luck and never give up!
